MARCH MADNESS...FLORIDA STYLE

During the nine years that we lived in New Bern, NC it was very obvious when MARCH MADNESS struck. Guys in suits looked a little groggy in the morning; bloodshot eyes were hidden behind Foster Grants all day; animated conversation never extended beyond MBA stats, and thriving businesses closed for days during the FINAL FOUR (knowing their employees wouldn't show up for work anyway). It was impressive. All about a ball, some sneakers, a rim and a gazillion bucks. God Bless America!!

So now I'm living in Florida, and it's "March Madness", but it's different. Almost everyone wears sunglasses and lots of them looked dazed 24/7. Businesses are closing but for more than a few days. The world as we've known it has morphed into something we've never seen before. So it's March. And it's Madness. But different, because this won't be over in 4 or 8 or 12.

I think it's a perfect opportunity to refocus on yourself. What makes you happy? How can you help make someone else happy? What can we learn from each other? Why can't I train my dog to walk calmly on a leash (when I'd be willing to do it for him)? They're all important questions to ponder deep in your soul. In the meantime I'll share the answer to one of Life's great all time questions: what's there to eat?

Over the past few months Bonni Bakes has hosted numerous wonderful chefs, preparing a wide variety of ethnic cuisines...all to rave reviews. Organizing it has been a logistical challenge and learning experience for me. We've figured out how to offer you unique menus that are never boring at a reasonable price and offer a delicious experience for you. You've embraced the concept and I've figured out how to do it without making myself crazy. Fewer chefs, more cuisines.

Let's talk lunch:
Starting in April we'll continue Amy's Old Florida Southern Comfort lunch on Tuesday. Midweek on Wednesday & Thursday will be rotating ethnic menus, all prepared by Stephanie Peterson of Ethiopian Dinner fame. Friday & Saturday Bonni takes over the kitchen reins with her handmade pizza, soup, salads & baked yummies.

Let's talk dinner:
Join us on Monday April 6th for "Around The World Dinner" featuring Baba Ganoush, Insalata Mista, Boeuf Bourguignon, Curry Basil Shrimp and Mango & Raspberry Sorbet With Fresh Berries. Details to follow soon.

Due to popular demand Stephanie will be cooking A Traditional Ethiopian Dinner every Tuesday at 5:30 & 7:30 seatings, starting April 7th.

Ever drooled over pictures of a gourmet dinner in a glossy foodie magazine and wished someone would cook it for you? Your prayers have been answered. On Saturday April 25th Bonni & Steph will re-create one of those meals for a limited group of people. Menu & details to follow.

In order to get set-up for the changes, Bonni Bakes will be closed for a few days after Amy's March 31st "Southern Comfort Lunch". We'll reopen for the April 3rd ArtWalk, 6-9:30pm, featuring that thin crust pizza and other surprises. Also our back garden and my personal residence, The TreeHouse, will be open to the public on Saturday April 4th during the Village Garden Walk from 11-4.

What else is cooking at Bonni Bakes this week...

For Bonni Bakes it's a week packed with yummy ethnic goodies. We just got through St Pat's today with Amy's Irish specials and Wednesday night Parvin will be hosting her Persian New Year Dinner. It's sold out, but maybe we can convince her to do another dinner soon. And Stephanie, who has been bringing joy to the lips of everyone tasting her Ethiopian Dinners, is the focus of an in-depth story in the Wednesday Sarasota Herald Tribune's Food Section, written by Marsha Fottler. Not only does Marsha have discriminating taste, but she's a damn good writer, so I advise you to buy a copy and read it for yourself.

As for me I've been hankering for some Greek Moussaka, a favorite often appearing during our legendary dinner parties in North Carolina. Ah those Irish memories...

Can't believe that I've made it so far this week with so little sleep. Now, it's almost time for St Patrick to appear, banish the snakes from Ireland and encourage everyone left to seek shelter in the nearest bar. Not such a bad idea.

Beginning in 1967 I joined the throngs seeking shelter to a watering hole where everyone knew your name. It wasn't Cheers, it was The Lions Head in NYC. Introduced to all by a "regular" (the man who would become my first husband and father of my incredible kids), I was instantly surrounded by Irish music and poetry. Joe was a lawyer and represented his friends The Clancy Brothers. Together we all spent several evenings every week eating, drinking, singing & laughing for years. I remember sitting around that big round table the night Tommy Makem sang a tune he had just written about "the troubles". It was about the partitioning of Ireland called "Four Green Fields" and we were all moved to tears. If you have a chance to listen to it, it would be worth your time.

At one point while I was pregnant we held a dinner party centered around a very ambitious menu (Julia Child's Veal Prince Orloff). After dinner, the ever gracious brothers (Patrick, Tom & Liam), ushered me out of the kitchen and insisted on washing the dishes. I watched in fascination & horror as they filled-up our small kitchen singing, drinking and tossing Lenox china between themselves. Not a dish was ever broken but I think I broke the record for holding my breath.

Celebrating St Patrick's Day in NYC always meant hearing lots of mashing metal as the day wore on. It wasn't a smart day to park on the street as very drunk people tried to negotiate their cars in and out of parking spaces. Women with hair dyed green for the day (and their matching poodles) were common place. I won't comment on the green beer or bagels. Like many traditional ethnic holidays it ultimately became a citywide celebration. The famous white line down 5th Ave was painted green for the day until it became economically unfeasible.

This Saturday the Village of the Arts invites you to its St Patricks Day Parade, starting at 10:30 am close to the front of Bonni Bakes on 12 St West. Come on down, enjoy and cheer on the marchers as they wind their way around The Village, concluding at Graciela's Corner (11 Ave/12 St W) into the waiting arms of the Budweiser Beer Truck. Here's what's cooking at Bonni Bakes for the next two days.

A GREAT TIME TO BE ALIVE & IN THE VILLAGE...

What a wonderful weekend...great weather, great art, great throngs of people strolling through the Village surrounded by live music. A family with a vague puzzled look rang my bell at 11am Sunday. They arrived for the ArtWalk and couldn't understand why the streets were so quiet & empty. When I pointed out that it was Sunday, they laughed at discovering they were 23-24 hours too late (considering Daylight Savings Time). They were forced to trade the anticipated ambience of The Village for just another day at the beach.

The dazzling pace of things continue, and I'll just give you a brief run-down:

* Tuesday night March 10 @ Bonni Bakes is Stephanie & Rahel's Ethiopian Dinner, $15 per person, all inclusive. The 6pm sitting is SOLD OUT, but there are still a few spots available at 8pm...call me at 746-6647 to snap up those seats.

* Thursday night March 12 @ Bishop Planetarium the Film Festival is showing "Peace With Seals". If all of that hunting for the Mediterranean Monk seal makes you hungry, there will be some Bonni Bakes desserts available in their cafe. I certify that no seals were harmed in the making of these desserts.

* Saturday March 14 join the St Patrick Day Parade through The Village, beginning at 10:30. There are over 25 groups set to march, starting on 10th Ave and headed directly toward the front of Bonni Bakes. I hope they remember to TURN LEFT. Look for the Village of the Arts float, starring the FUnKy MEn.

These
are the 4' styrofoam sculptures that we're giving FREE to Manatee County School art classes to decorate. They'll all come back on Sat May 9th to celebrate ARTS ALIVE, our free day long celebration of the arts for the entire community. If you donate $50, you can have your own FUnky Man PLUS provide two to the schools. For just $20 you can buy a FUNKY DOG, CAT, GECKO or GUITAR to decorate and keep.
Talk to me, I'm the Co-Chair of the event and have I got a FUNKY for you!!

* Wednesday March 18 it's a Persian New Year Dinner, prepared by Parvin. The entire dinner (including choice of entree) is only $15 per person, and again the 6pm is SOLD OUT and a few seats are still available at 8pm. You won't find this kind of food anywhere else!

* Thursday March 26 Amy's offering her first Southern Comfort Supper. Starting out with Drunken Cajun Shrimp and Bubblin' Hot Veggie Cheese Dip, followed by Chopped House Salad, Blushin' Citrus Bourbon Glazed Pork Tenderloin or Old School Chicken Pot Pie and Mamma M.J.'s Sweet Southern Surprise. All that for $19.95 per person (gratuity not included), so reserve now or kick yourself later.

All dinners have two seatings: 6pm and 8pm and you're welcome to bring your own beer or wine. We don't accept credit cards, so please be prepared to pay by cash.

Before I run out of steam, here are the menus for this week:

Tues March 10 Amy's Southern Comfort Cuisine lunch served 11-2:

More menus, birthdays and art...

Well, seems like Winter might be over and Spring is about to sprung...or at least cause the clocks to move forward one hour Saturday night. Lots of exciting things afoot in the next few days. For me, it's personal. Friday March 6 is my beautiful daughter Abby's birthday...the same magical day that transformed me from a bystander into a Mommy. Thanks Abby, you've set the bar high and it's been wonderful watching you grow into such a caring, smart, creative, loving and funny adult. To celebrate your day (from a distance), I've put yummy cupcakes with swirling chocolate frosting on the menu. We'll toast you down to the finger-licking crumbs and carve out a fun escape together in the next few months.

Saturday I celebrate Rea Brown's birthday. Not only was he my favorite husband but he taught me how to become a Fatalist (by example), "plussed my life" as Pat Beece often said, filled my heart with joy, caused me to grin whenever I saw him and greatly simplified the spelling of my last name. Although he died in 2003, he's never far from my side and every day is cause to celebrate the good fortune of finding & living with your true love for over twenty years. I wanted to add one of Rea's favorite things on the menu but couldn't figure out where to put the cigar.

This is an ArtWalk weekend, which means that the galleries & studios in The Village of the Arts are open Friday night 6-9:30pm and Saturday 11-4. Four galleries are hosting their Grand Opening (all located on 12 St W between 11th & 12th Aves) as well as the opening of The Emerging Artists Competition. Incredible art work done by Manatee County students will be displayed in galleries for the month of March. We're proud to have quite a few on display so please stop by and see them first hand.

Hummmmm, getting hungry? I thought you'd never ask. Here are the menus for Thursday & Friday. During the Friday night ArtWalk I'll be cooking up those classic New York pizzas and look forward to seeing you.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

PS Hey Leona, it isn't quite midnight yet, so it counts as sending out the menu ON Thursday!

Personal Choices...the last bastion of control

I was trying so hard not to hear that the Dow dropped below 700 today but somehow the news reached my brain. The last time I felt so immobilized was in 1997, by a simple sentence "you have breast cancer". I heard the words but didn't know who they were directed at. I even remember looking around the small medical cubicle trying to determine who the recipient was. Finally I realized I was the only person there, sitting on a cold wooden stool wearing a scratchy paper "gown"...and he was talking to me. That surgeon (who I had never seen before) didn't exhibit a tad of bedside manner or compassion. At that moment I promised myself he would never touch me. And I saw to it that he didn't. Somehow you find the strength to dig deep into your soul, take back the power, and make positive decisions about your life.

Downtown Bradenton is home to a lot of wonderful artistic venues, yet small enough for us to co-mingle our talents. The South Florida Museum kicks off it's Cinema Cafe this Thursday with the American Museum of Natural History's Margaret Mead Traveling Film & Video Festival. That's a mouthful! The first film is about a family of goat herders and the challenges and life decisions they are forced to make. I'm delighted to have been chosen to provide some of the baked goods for the Cafe. Bonni Bakes' yummy cupcakes, brownies & lemon bars will be available along with beer, wine, snacks, soft drinks and coffee. General admission is $8 per screening Thursdays at 7pm on March 5th, March 12th, March 19th, March 26 & April 2nd. For more info, call 941-746-4131.

If you're looking for some down home lovin' (pronounced Shrimp n' Grits), stop by for lunch with Amy on Tuesday. And if that isn't enough, Mark Your Calendar for Amy's first "Southern Comfort Supper Party"! Thursday, March 26th. There will be two seatings at 6pm and 8pm. Dinner will include: Appetizers, Salad, Choice of Entree, and Dessert. Inclusive price of $19.95 (gratuity NOT included). And don't forget it's BYOB, so bring whatever you would like to drink! Full menu and event details will be available early next week but reserve your table early cause it's sure to be an Old Florida Good Time!
