Something Old, Something New, Nothing Blue

This same Sunday, six years ago, I was watching the final round of a golf tournament on tv with my son & my husband. Immediately thereafter we were delighted & surprised to learn one of our favorite movies of all time, Mel Brooks' "The Producers" with Zero Mostel, was coming on. We knew it by heart because it was the only commercial DVD we owned. At some point a nice man in an awful green suit walked in, introduced himself and asked Rea if he'd like to talk. Rea, realizing at once that he was a "man of the cloth" waved him off politely with a borderline sarcastic quip. We finished watching the movie amidst a lot of laughter. When I ultimately walked outside the room I was gently asked by Rea's doctor, "did I know that he had less than 48 hours to live?" No...that shocking pronouncement came totally out of the blue to me! Numb, I returned to the place that had become our temporary warm cocoon, for what would be our last hours together.

This Wednesday, June 3rd, will be six years since Rea died and I will always be grateful to Dr Saef for asking that question which was SO IMPORTANT, yet no one else at the hospital had even alluded to it. I mention this because, as our good friend Pat Beece used to say, "you never know when you're gonna get lucky." That unexpected comment gave our family just enough time to allow all five kids to get here and have a final private conversation with their Dad. Rea is physically gone but I know he's laughing that once again his classic Foster Grant ad campaign is back on tv. "Isn't that Raquel Welch behind those Foster Grants?" If you'd like to see his original LIFE Magazine ads they're hanging over my desk at Bonni Bakes, and his reel isn't far away. I met Rea at the ad agency that produced those spots, Geer DuBois, when Judy & I sold ourselves to this forward thinking organization as the original job-sharing team in the early 70's. The agency is long since gone, Judy is still my best friend and it was my favorite workplace ever...thanks Peter!!

But it's June and a new schedule of yummy delights are awaiting you. Stephanie and I will be presenting a fun variety of foods and events this month. We're offering LUNCH TIME DELIVERY SERVICE Tues-Fri between the Manatee River/17th Ave/W 14th St/ E 9th St. The plan is for deliveries to leave every 30 minutes (11:30, 12, 12:30, 1, 1:30 & 2pm). We've gotten a new fax machine so you can fax your order in early (from 9am) and we'll have it ready to deliver at your specified time. Same phone number: 746-6647

Steph has two Ethiopian Dinners scheduled for Tues June 9th and June 23rd. All inclusive, vegetarian option available, and only $15/pp. Reservations required. Also we're offering three baking classes this month. Steph (with her 30+ years experience as a pastry chef) will be teaching "Easy as Pie" on June 16th at 7pm and "Bake With Fillo" on June 30th at 7pm. Both will be demonstration classes where you'll watch her do it & learn professional techniques, ask questions, get recipes and taste the results. Class size is limited and it's only $20/per person.

I'm also teaching a class on Sat June 27th at 3pm called "Mom (or Dad) and Me In The Kitchen" for kids 6-12. It's inspired by my young friend & special customer Alex Winn (pictured above) and her Mom Julie, who I've met during their "girl time" outings in The Village of the Arts. This will be a hands-on class, limited to 6 parent/child pairs @ $30/family. Call 746-6647 to reserve a spot. Check out Alex's beautiful pizza drawing hanging up on the porch...wish I could hire her as my publicist.

Since my quick trip to NYC I'm a little home-sick for good bread. It manifested itself this week by my making Sour Rye Bread and Mini Reubens. I've got the bread-making jimmies, so you'll be seeing lots of fresh baked bread on every daily menu...loaves also available to take home. In order to help keep track of the ever-changing menus I've put together a monthly schedule in PDF format. Drop me a note at bonnibakes@gmail.com to request one.

Don't miss the June ArtWalk this Fri from 6-9:30pm and Sat from 11-4pm in The Village of the Arts. We may be grilling on the patio if the stars line up and I get my act together. Just like Bogie said "we'll always have Paris" and at Bonni Bakes we'll always have Pizza...for the Fri ArtWalk. Full menu on Saturday.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

Regards from The Big Apple

It was such a short visit that it's almost a blur. Monday I flew up to NYC on JetBlue from Sarasota, direct to JFK in 2 hours 10 minutes. We arrived 20 minutes earlier than planned. Their newly renovated terminal (that iconic former TWA modernistic building) is truly 21st Century. Lots of floating glass, user-friendly computer screens, good traffic flow and quick proximity to the Air Train (a quick inexpensive method of getting to your ultimate NYC destination). The new automated 2-car shuttle travels around a track looping the airport. It dropped me at the subway connection for the Express E train, which flew past the local stations in Queens, crossed the East River and raced into Manhattan. An hour later I was sitting in my daughter's apartment near Union Square. All this for only $7 ($5 to ride around JFK plus $2 for the subway). A great bargain and in my opinion, a better option than sitting in traffic during rush hour on the highway.

For 3 days I laughed, hugged, ate, drank, kicked back and enjoyed the company of my kids, friends and family. There was an authentic dinner in Chinatown with Abby & Rob; catching up over lunch with Judy on the Eastside; Erin's celebration dinner reuniting the whole family (including my ex-husband); Columbia University's endless outdoor graduation ceremony with inflated condoms floating overhead in the bright sunshine; the first nose-to-nose introduction with my adorable Cockapoo "grand-dog" Olive; and an emotional time with my close cousin Krista who is determined to beat back her recent cancer diagnosis. A lot in a short time. Before I knew it I was back at JFK headed home. And now I discover that Memorial Weekend was scheduled a week early...why doesn't anyone tell me these things?

This past Thursday Brent Conklin wrote a lovely article about BONNI BAKES in the Bradenton Herald weekend section. If you missed it you can see it here http://www.bradenton.com/entertainment/story/1454933.html
He really "got it". It isn't always easy to explain what we're doing at BONNI BAKES. We're celebrating lots of delicious international cuisines that aren't easily accessible in this area, making them from scratch with great ingredients and offering unique meals at very affordable prices in a charming setting. This is the last week to enjoy Amy's Southern Comfort Cuisine at lunch on Tuesday 11-2. For the past few months she's gotten rave reviews, so enjoy it before she's gone. She'll also be hosting Amy's Supper Club (by reservation) this Wednesday night. See the details below. Because of the holiday weekend, we won't be having an Ethiopian Dinner this Tuesday evening.

The new schedule for June will be available shortly. Look for Ethiopian lunches, Baking Classes ("As Easy As Pie", "Baking With Fillo"), new lunchtime delivery service and more New York City specialties. The beautiful (and delicious) wedding cake pictured above was made for Amara & Slade's Village Wedding last week. They chose yellow cake striped with lemon and lime curds, surrounded by mango/lime cream cheese frosting...decorated by some of the 900+ origami peace cranes that themed the wedding. Stephanie, with over 30 years experience as a pastry chef (she must have started piping in her highchair), was responsible. Now you can plan/design your special occasion cake directly with the artist instead of just picking out a photo from a book. You'll be amazed to see cakes that Steph has produced...including her award winning ones!!

If you'd like to find out what's on our menu (sent directly to your inbox each week), email a request to bonnibakes@gmail.com Remember, we love you, but we don't take Debit/Credit Cards...or your first born!

Spectacular ethnic food, a great night with La Cage Aux Folles, two FPL power outages, the Manatee Players' Fundraising Dinner and a wedding cake

What a whirlwind week this has been! I was very impressed with how tastefully & smoothly the Manatee Players pulled off their fundraiser at Bonni Bakes on Saturday night. It has motivated me to allocate one evening a month to a local non-profit organization for a fundraising evening at Bonni Bakes...no charge for the venue. You may, or may not know that before I became a baker I was a clinical social worker/therapist and the President of United Way for three counties in North Carolina. I know how tough it is to raise money in an uncertain economy, despite the increased need for services. So, if you're on the Board or an active member of a local charity and want to take advantage of this opportunity, get in touch with me. Until then, I look forward to spending a few hours sitting quietly on my flight to NYC Monday. I'll be back in time to cook on Friday & Saturday, but why wait...check out what Amy & Steph have planned for lunch this week.

My Countdown For New York City Has Begun

I don't know why this week has left me such an emotional wreck. My mood has been mercurial and I cry at the slightest thing. Someone sharing their story of survival against cancer...hearing the National Anthem while our flag flies high in the background...food on a hot grill triggering succulent memories of Gambas a la Plancha in Mahon...looking at Rea's original Life Magazine campaign for Foster Grant after someone tells me they just saw Raquel Welch reprising her role on tv...mastering something new for the first time, alone...and realizing that it's been almost six years since Rea went into the hospital for the last time. I know it couldn't possibly be that long ago because I can still feel his arms around me. And then the phone rings...and I'm back.

It's awful to lose someone you love. Particularly if they were the other half of how you defined your life as a couple for over 25 years (my ying to your yang). We even signed telegrams to our dear friends in Spain "Bonnirea", in part to save the cost of paying for another word, in part because it defined us. A nano-second later I'm flooded by visions of us dancing at Peter Landau's 50th and the rumors that followed. Honestly, Peter, we didn't do that at your party, but it made us smile for years knowing that you believed the rumors. So, I'm very glad that I'll be flying up to NYC for a few days next week to celebrate my delightful daughter-in-law Erin's graduation from Columbia University with her Master's in Psychology.

As part of today's long-distance commemoration of Mother's Day, my kids Rob & Abby jointly called to wish/sing/laugh their love and gratitude that I carried them forth into this world. It was, and is my pleasure. Being their mother has given me incredible joy and provided an amazing journey as I watch their individual lives evolve.

In the midst of this phone call there suddenly appeared a lot of background noise & commotion on Rob's end. Seems he & Erin were in front of the train station on W125th Street when a bus stopped and the driver frantically tried to get their attention. Back in the day it wouldn't have taken Ralph Cramden that long to turn the spotlight on himself. The driver asked them to help his blind passenger cross the street safely. That's so New York! Anyone who's lived there gets it. It's a place with a big heart where millions of wonderful folks are your small town neighbors. When we used to split our time between Manhattan & Warren, VT years ago, I always loved returning to the City. You could feel its pulsating energy & taste the air as you got closer. The Upper West Side always tasted better to me than acres of grass laden ozone in the Green Mountains. I think it's genetic.

This week at Bonni Bakes we'll be traveling, gastronomically speaking. Tuesday Amy covers the Deep South with her special brand of down-home cooking. May will be the last month that you can find her cooking lunch here on Tuesdays, so don't put it off, come on down! Tuesday night at 5:30 & 7:30 it's A Traditional Ethiopian Dinner prepared by Stephanie, based on her mother-in-law's family recipes. Since her daughter Rahel is now studying in Gainesville, I'll be helping out, so save your questions for Steph. Wednesday bring your appetite to Turkey with Steph's all vegetarian menu! Thursday Steph is presenting French fare featuring produce from her organic garden & check out her pastries. And as for me, my mood draws me toward memories of wonderful times we spent with friends on Spain's island of Minorca, surrounded by laughter, white sand, beach bars and lots of local gin (con hielo for me). Friday & Saturday I'll recreate those flavors of summer in Spain,
in addition to my NYC pizzas. Please join us...no passport required. Lunch is available daily from 11-2 and although we love you, we don't take debit/credit cards.

A very special evening event will be held on Sat May 16 at Bonni Bakes. It's a Capital Campaign Fundraising Dinner for The Manatee Players. Artistic Director Rick Kerby puts aside his megaphone & whip, dons a starched apron and will produce an incredible French menu in 3 Acts (Amuse-Bouche, Dinner and Dessert). Limited Seating, 5:30 & 7 pm. $50 per person. Call Janene at 941-749-1111 for reservations. It's a great cause and he's a great chef!!

It's a FUNKY week...join us for Arts Alive 2009

At least eight years ago Anna D'Aste (talented clay artist, teacher, resident of The Village, current VP of The Artist's Guild of Manatee, massage therapist and my friend ) and I started talking about creating a Village of the Arts sponsored event that could enable personal expression through art for the public. We wanted it to be FREE and reach beyond artificial classifications (financial, age, religion, politics or social standing). We continued to talk, but it took a few more years for the Village of the Arts to mature to a point where we could actually pull this off.

Now there are close to 40 artists/artisans living and/or working in this previously blighted neighborhood. It truly took "a village" to commit heart, soul & wallet to re-hab houses into colorful tantalizing studios filled with unique, honest artistic work and build a strong supportive community out of a group of strangers. Learn about it all at www.villageofthearts.com

It's been a roller coaster ride over the past ten years but the wheels of the cars never jumped the track. Sometimes it takes a lifetime to achieve a dream. We're lucky, it only took eight years, give or take. And you're invited to be part of the first interactive arts festival in The Village of the Arts...Arts Alive 2009. It happens this Saturday from 10-4 throughout The Village. The concept was to raise money from the public, produce as many blank 5' styrofoam sculptures as possible, give them at NO COST to studenst in art classes throughout Manatee schools, to be completed using their creative spirit. This Saturday 150 uniquely embellished Funky Men will be displayed, along with over 22 FREE DIFFERENT ART EXPERIENCES for you to participate in, as we gather for this uplifting community-wide celebration. I don't think it could have come at a better time!

A dedicated group organized in the fall of 2008 and took up the mantle of making the dream happen. It meant using Mark Piers' drawings of Funky Men; lots of Bradenton & beyond folks donating money so we could have them cut out of styrofoam; Anna overseeing the production of raw materials into recognizable Men; Kim's endless quest for supporters to make a few more available; Miche's long reach connecting styrofoam figures with art teachers in Manatee County; and a ton of others who fleshed it out and will be on the street bringing it to life this Saturday. Enjoy an outdoor stroll & participate in the art playground that awaits you. Bring the whole family, look for free parking around the perimeter of The Village (9th-17th Ave and 10th-13th St) or at the City Parking Garage on 12th St W north of 8th Ave.

Of course, if you get hungry there will be street vendors and BONNI BAKES will have unique vegetarian platters to go of Falafel/Pita/Sauce or Grilled Beef or Chicken Skewers/Couscous Salad for just $5 each. Alas no pizza on Saturday, but we'll also have a great array of cookies, muffins, brownies & pastries to make you smile. But that's Saturday...what's cooking at Bonni Bakes at lunch before then? I thought you'd never ask...

Amy has decided that this will be her last month cooking at Bonni Bakes, so make sure you don't miss out on her delicious talents...it will be your loss.
