THE FUTURE LOOKS DELICIOUS...

I'm really excited about some of the upcoming things we'll be doing at Bonni Bakes. For HALLOWEEN we've got cookie goodie bags with 3 adorable hand decorated little gingerbread bats, pumpkins & ghosts...only $1.50. Or a larger Mummy Cookie for just $1. Muffin wants me to remind you that there are also DOGGIE TREAT BAGS but he won't be getting one unless he walks nicely while wearing his costume for trick-or-treating.

Now that I've had a chance to regain my equilibrium, we've planned some wonderful special dinners. My friend Scott Duncan is a man of many talents. He operates Duncan's Kitchens, where he spends his days as a kitchen designer. In his spare time he started Get Together Gourmets, a monthly cooking club, (www.gettogethergourmets.com). I've been on the tasting end of his culinary pursuits for about 2 years and have tried to entice him into doing Dinner At Bonni Bakes. At last I wore him down and he'll be cooking an Autumn Harvest Dinner on Sat Nov 14th. Reserve early because there's only one seating and numbers are limited.

SCOTT DUNCAN'S AUTUMN HARVEST DINNER

Sat Dec 5th Rick Kerby is cooking up a fund raising dinner to help pay operating expenses for The Manatee Players. For $50/pp you'll enjoy his extensive gourmet meal of Hors D'Oeuvres, Dinner and Dessert. Two seatings, 6 & 8pm. His last dinner sold out very quickly. For reservations & more details call Leona at 748.0111.

Not to be overshadowed by the foregoing, Scott & I team up to produce a memorable MOROCCAN DINNER on Sat Dec 12th. Details available soon.

If you're like me and not planning on spending Thanksgiving with family this year, join us for BONNI BAKES' COMMUNAL POT LUCK THANKSGIVING DINNER. No money involved just bring part of the meal to share with others. Call me at 746.6647 to sign up and tell me what you're bringing. I'll make the turkey.

Don't forget to turn your clock back an hour Sat night when daylight saving time changes. I personally haven't noticed much change in the seasons so it's still time for refreshing icy cold soup and the crunch of a homemade NYC bagel. Here's this week's menu.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

Thanks to every one who participated in/and or supported our "ARTSY UNDIES SHOW", we raised $732 that was donated to the American Cancer Society as part of "MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER".Our exhibit of 51 decorated bras on a mission can be seen until the end of the month at BONNI BAKES in the Village of the Arts at 930 12th St W (just south of MLK/9th Ave) Thur-Sat from 11-2. To arrange a private showing call me at 746-6647.

The 3 mile walk around the Sarasota Polo Club is this Saturday, Oct 24th, beginning at 9am. If you'd like to walk with our team, "OINKING FOR A CURE", let me know. We're walking to honor breast cancer survivors, remember those we've lost and raise funds, awareness and hope that a cure for this disease will be found soon. I'm very grateful to everyone who helped make our effort so successful! Remember to do monthly self-exam, alone or with someone you love.

Starting in mid-November we'll be receiving our weekly share of fresh organic produce from Geraldson's Community Farm. This CSA is beginning it's 3rd year and you too can purchase a full or half-share for the season (Nov-May). Each week you get an assortment of what's in season (veggies & herbs) plus the ability to pick some extra things right off the plants at the farm in NW Bradenton. We'll be featuring a "Geraldson's Platter" on our menu using what's in our basket that week. For more information call Linda at 941-723-3252 or check out their website geraldsoncommunityfarm.org. If you care about where your food is coming from, how it's being grown & handled, this is for you. They also have a Buying Club where you can get locally produced meat, eggs, cheese, etc.

I went to the Pet Expo last weekend and met with volunteers from several local dog rescue groups. We'll be donating profits from "Muffin's Menu" to them. In addition, we'll be hosting a GOLD BUYING EVENT during the Dec ArtWalk, with 10% of the net sales GOING TO THE DOGS. Eat your heart out pussy cats! Start gathering up any gold you're thinking about selling and bring it that night for a FREE VERBAL APPRAISAL. Muffin & his friends thank you...woof, woof.

More exciting things in the works for the upcoming months, stay tuned. In the meantime, here's our menu for this week. Since I'm doing the "Strides" walk on Saturday we may open a tad later than 11am...thanks for your understanding.

Hugs from the kitchen,

CHANGING GEARS WITHOUT A CLUTCH

NOTE NEW HOURS: OPEN THUR, FRI & SAT FOR LUNCH
served 11 - 2

THE OCT 24 MEZE DINNER HAS BEEN CANCELLED

This past week I've been filled with an incredibly wide range of emotions. I'm still not sure I've found my land legs now that the roller coaster ride appears to be over. I was very touched by your outpouring of love & compassion regarding the loss of my cousin Krista last week. It's still hard for me to accept that she's gone but the warmth of friends blunts some of the raw feelings. Thank you, you've helped me!!

The profusion of media attention paid to our breast cancer awareness fundraising show, "ARTSY UNDIES" continues to amaze me. Using the Andy Warhol Scale ("every person has 15 minutes of fame") I think I scored 6 Andys & have used up my lifetime quota. People have reported reading about it in the Bradenton Herald, Sarasota Herald Tribune, West Coast Woman and other publications, including a national one. Michelle Rieg's piece on our local ABC tv affiliate, Channel 7, ran at 5pm, 6pm, 11pm, 2:30am and even 7am the next day again. Erica Newport's write-up on www.bradentontimes.com positioned it in the context of an ArtWalk and included interviews with some of the artists and great photos.

I'm grateful for all of the publicity because the purpose of the show is to encourage people to get a yearly mammogram and see a doctor if they find something suspicious. I'm a 12 year BC survivor and my cancer was found during a routine mammogram. There is a program that can help some women who don't have health insurance & can't afford testing. For information call the Manatee Health Dept at 941-748-0747 and ask for Jan or Kathy. Discovering BC in its earliest stages usually results in a better outcome. Ironically, one of the participating artists in our show was diagnosed with BC only two days after dropping off her entry. She has already had surgery and is recuperating before further treatment, knowing that she has the loving support of all of us. If you haven't experienced being in the midst of 51 uniquely decorated bras on a mission, they will be on display at Bonni Bakes for the rest of the month.

I got home from my cousin Krista's funeral close to midnight last Sunday and dragged my ass for days trying to recover emotionally & from sleep deprivation. I was blindsided at 3pm Thursday when Stephanie announced she just decided not to work here any longer, effective immediately. Stunned, numbed doesn't even approach my reaction. So I apologize to those of you who had reservations for the Meze Dinner on Oct 24, now cancelled. I'm sorry that her announcement came after the Village of Arts' ArtWalk magazine covering the next two months had just been printed, making the information in both my listing & ad inaccurate.

You can probably guess that my ultimate reaction (a few hours of sleep helps amazingly!) was one of re-direction. I believe you should never get sucked into looking back (Lot's wife had that real salty reaction) but instead embrace the future and all of its possibilities. With little opportunity for long-range planning, for now I've decided to cook lunch on Thur, Fri & Sat from 11-2, basically preparing a menu of those great NYC favorites like thin-crust pizza, fresh salads, home made soup, fresh baked bread & yummy desserts. Can fresh bagels be far behind?

In addition, the DOGGIE DINING EXPERIENCE will be available at lunch each day. In conjunction with the 12 year old Beardie/mix I live with, Spats McMuffin Brown (known lovingly as Muffin), we've cooked/tested/tasted/agreed upon the items featured on "MUFFIN"S MENU" for doggies dining with their people. Everything is made from fresh, natural, people quality ingredients. Starting in November we'll be partnering with a local dog rescue group each month and donating 100% of the profits from MUFFIN'S MENU to them. You can bring your dog with you for lunch but you have to eat outside on the patio. Oh, there are a few more City of Bradenton rules, but polite dogs on leashes shouldn't have a problem. Free water bowls are always available. Ordering from Muffin's Menu is strictly optional. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

A SAD FAREWELL...

I just came back from a funeral in NJ for my close cousin Krista. We've been friends since childhood, lived together my last year of college and fulfilled the role of "sister" for each other. Earlier this year she sought medical care for a lump on her neck and was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer that also spread to her spine. During these last two weeks her life was in a downward spiral yet we weren't prepared when she suddenly died on Thursday.

Krista never had an easy life but she exuded a radiant optimism that propelled her forward instead of allowing her to wallow in past pain. Problems were merely challenges to be overcome, and she always tackled them creatively & outside the box. When she needed to earn more money she took in female foreign exchange students, who also enriched the life of her 12 year old adopted daughter. She wanted to be a "mother" more than anything else. In 2000 I found myself accompanying her to China to pick up her daughter, since her husband couldn't go. Some of the families we met during those three weeks became her extended family and they were also there mourning at her grave. A co-worker from Bloomingdales shared, through her tears, how Krista's friendship & support helped her move her life forward despite an awful childhood. Another friend remembered their initial meeting at the off-Broadway theatre group La Mama and the 30+ year friendship that followed. A neighbor originally from Ecuador spoke of the bonding & closeness that made them ultimately embrace each other as "sister". And then there was the woman standing next to me who said she “had to sing”. And in time, sing she did...as only Krista's very longtime friend Roberta Flack could. Her song brought most of us to tears.

Krista seemed to have lived many lives and yet she found a way to remain friends with the eclectic cast she met along the way. At her funeral we all met and heard each other’s stories for the first time. Theatrical to the end, this finale wove together all the strands of her life. Krista, I’ll miss hearing your voice and sharing your friendship, energy, laughter, honesty, love and compassion. Oh no, I’m not ready to say “good-bye”, it’s way too soon.

Take a minute to call that person you’ve been thinking about; surprise someone you love; give them a flower; make them laugh; tell them how you feel. Every day is a gift. You could even take them out to lunch...look what’s cooking at Bonni Bakes this week.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

A THUMBNAIL OF WHAT'S GOING ON

The past week flew by and is merely a blur in retrospect. It was capped by a surprise party for 11 year old Ian & friends who learned to make/bake/decorate/eat the hockey stick cake & assorted pucks they created. Friday and Saturday people kept arriving to drop off their incredible entries for the "Artsy Undies" show. Norma floored us when she brought forth 14, count them, FOURTEEN bras from members of her own family. Look for a story about them coming up soon in the Bradenton Herald.

Karen Jennis and I (mostly Karen) spent the entire day yesterday "hanging" the show and finally stopped at 6:30pm, to be continued Wednesday. I'm honored and proud to be in the company of such caring people. This is something that you don't want to miss. The opening is this Friday during the October ArtWalk at Bonni Bakes, from 6-9:30pm. If you come early you'll have a chance to meet some of the artists. Their work will be on display for the entire month of October so stop in whenever we're open (Tues-Sat 11-2). We also have some of those delicious Ginger Kidz cookies, decorated in colorful bras & panties, for sale at just $2 each...with 100% of sales donated to the American Cancer Society. October is "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" so remember to check yours and your loved ones' frequently!

Doggie Dining begins on Friday Oct 2 at lunch. You can bring your well behaved dog on a leash and have them stay next to you at our outdoor patio tables. Check out the page of rules that will be posted. Free water bowls for the pooch, you've got to order off the menu. We're not ready to unveil "Muffin's Menu for Furry Friends" just yet...but it will be coming in the next few weeks.

Check out this week's menus and look forward to seeing you soon!

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

A BIG TO DO ABOUT "TO-DO"

Have you ever noticed that a "to-do list" never gets shorter. In fact, I believe that items are added to it at a rate at least double what's being crossed off. Case in point, my current litany of assorted building repairs. They all seemed minor to me (what do I know) but some of them were very misleading. How could that little rotted spot in the door frame mask the need to replace the entire thing? Why does LG sell every individual ditsy part for their refrigerators until I need one? It took a week for the $18 part (they assured me was correct) to arrive. It wasn't right and now I'm told that LG only sells the ENTIRE replacement section at a mere $116.50. What's wrong with this picture? Where does the customer fit into the concept of "customer service"? Luckily for me, Howard (who once came just to lay the bamboo floor and stayed on for 7 months to finish building my TreeHouse) was the person running through my "to-do list". Nothing phases him as long as card carrying Republicans don't insist on talking politics. Two days later, and both sides of the paper sporting crossed-off items, we're done. You may not notice the improvements but I'm smiling a lot more. And yes, the last few minutes were spent hanging those pictures that have been leaning against the wall for the past two years! I hope there's a "Howard" in your life. If not, I'd be happy to pass his phone number on.

ATTENTION DOG OWNERS: The big news is that a few days ago Bonni Bakes became the FIRST business to receive a DOGGIE DINING PERMIT in the City of Bradenton. That means that you'll be able to bring your well-behaved, leashed dog with you when you enjoy lunch on the outdoor patio. We'll be launching everything very soon and I'll announce the opening date right here. Meanwhile, my dog Muffin and I are hard at work designing and tasting "Muffin's Menu". Homemade snacks with people quality ingredients (no kibble, dog food, junk, etc) and available if your furry friend wants to join you for lunch. Look for the return of "Muffin's Munchies" and that all time favorite "Cheese Babies". I want to partner with dog rescue groups to give them all the profits from anything ordered on "Muffin's Menu", plus a chance to publicize what they're doing and help find forever homes for adoptees. All of the dogs I've shared my life with have been adopted mixed breeds and many need homes, especially in these challenging economic times. If you know of a rescue group that you think would be interested please send me their contact information. Together we can have a good time and do some good work.

Well, I've worked up an appetite just thinking about all of this and our menus for the week are listed below. Don't forget there is an Ethiopian Dinner on Sat Sept 26th, reservations required. Entries in the "Artsy Undies" breast cancer fundraiser are coming in and you still have time to decorate a bra/panties, pay $15 to enter it (100% of that is donated to American Cancer Society), be feted at the private pre-opening artists' reception Oct 2 and then reclaim your entry in November so you can wear it proudly around your house! I look forward to seeing you soon...in or out of your entry.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

BOOBS & BAGELS

It's not too late to decorate a bra or panties and enter it in our Oct Breast Cancer Fundraiser, "Artsy Undies". $15 per entry (over 18) $5 (under 18) and the more outrageous the better because at the end of the month you get your artwork back. We want to encourage people to vacuum, prepare dinner and tend the garden in it. During the Friday night ArtWalk the feathers & beads were flying as Carol, Karen & Carol celebrated BYOB (Bring Your Own Bra). Check out their entries currently displayed inside the porch of Bonni Bakes...look but don't touch! Some people have expressed an interest in buying some of the entries and we'll consider that. After all, it's a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and we need your money. In addition, we have a hot little selection of Ginger Kidz (our delicious orange/ginger cookies) who have been decorated with bras & panties by Anna and her sisters. Just $2 each, delightfully gift wrapped in a cello bag, and sure to bring a smile.

And then there's the bagels. New York City is my home town and there are lots of things that I miss, aside from cooler weather. A real bagel (shaped by hand, boiled before baking, crusty exterior with chewy interior, and smaller than a breadbox) shmeared with Zabar's Scallion Cream Cheese and topped with nova, red onion and ripe tomato is nirvana for me. After years of experimentation I can honestly say my bagels could be stamped "Made in NYC". Let me know what you think.

This month we're consolidating menus so Steph's Italian menu is available Tues-Thurs and you can enjoy my NYC Brunch menu on Fri & Sat. See details below. We had the honor of being one of three restaurants serving Ethiopian food that were highlighted in a national magazine favored by professional chefs. It's a great article but I don't know how to put a hot link in here, so if you'd like to see a copy drop me an email at bonnibakes@gmail.com. Reserve now for Steph's Sept 26 SAT ETHIOPIAN DINNER two seatings: 5:30 & 7:30 pm $15+tax+tip all inclusive dinner. Reservations required TEL: (941) 746-6647 Serving Spicy Chicken, (doro wet) Chickpea Sauce, (yeshiro) Collard Greens, (gomen) Mild Beef Stew, (zigni alicha) Mixed Vegetable Stew, (yeataket alicha) Spicy Red Lentils, (yemisir kek wet), injera is served on the side to scoop the food up with. Coffee, tea sodas. Bring your own wine or beer. No corkage fee. VEGETARIAN PLATTERS AVAILABLE!

I'm working on something exciting and hope to be able to announce it next week. HINT: it involves dogs...no cats need apply. See you soon.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

SEPTEMBER MENUS @ BONNI BAKES

It's that time of month again, so of course we're reinventing ourselves. September is dedicated to the stable personalities...less frenetic, more focused. We'll be doing just two menus per week (down from our prior four). It should require less medication & memory testing on our parts. Steph will be presenting a culturally themed menu served Tues, Wed & Thurs. I'll be doing my New York City thang with the same menu for Fri & Sat. The exception is (and there's ALWAYS an exception!) the Village ArtWalk this Friday Sept 4 from 6-9:30pm is limited to NY Pizza and desserts, but Sat Sept 5 from 11-4pm reverts back to the full weekend menu. Did you get that? At least there won't be a pop quiz this time. The bottom line is that it really doesn't matter. We always have fresh, made-from-scratch, yummy stuff...come join us for whatever. Don't hesitate to call (941) 746-6647 and ask, "what's on the menu today?"

I'm Thankful The Damn Week Is Over...

So there I was hugging the incredible hulks of mangoes as they were plucked from the tree. All smiles, giddy, awed by how many I could wrap my arms around at once. It was hot so I splashed water on my face, neck & chest in between carrying my load, like Gunga Din. He was lucky, he carried water. I was naive, I carried fresh mangoes with its sap running onto my body. It was a few days later, after the painful itching rash & swelling began, that I learned that I had an allergic reaction to the mangoes. Specifically, the clear fluid that oozes after its umbilical cord with the tree is severed. That fluid contains the same chemical compound found in POISON IVY!!!! I've been a mess ever since. Google "mango allergy" and educate yourself because we're living in a tropical paradise and Mother Nature sometimes has a wicked sense of humor.

To distract myself from all of this, some other force of Nature decided that it would be interesting for a pipe to burst under the bathroom floor at the bakery. That's how Sunday morning started. You might understand why I'm anxious to get back to work and safely encase myself in flour. For this last week in August we'll feature Lebanese, Greek & Turkish lunch entrees courtesy of Stephanie Tues-Thur, and I'll be doing my New York City thing Fri-Sat. See details below.

We're ending the month on a high note. Saturday night, August 29, Steph & I will team up to present the Spanish Beach Dinner. The menu is based on lush picnics I've participated in on the wonderful island of Menorca, in the Mediterranean off the coast of Barcelona. As usual there will be two seatings @ 5:30 and 7:30; you can bring your own wine, beer or sangria; it is all inclusive at $20+tax/per person; we don't take credit or debit cards, cash only; reservations required. Call 941-746-6647 to reserve...space is limited. Here's the menu:

Gazpacho (icy cold pureed tomato based vegetable soup); Tortilla Espanol (classic potato & onion frittata); Gambas a la Plancha (large shrimp grilled with lemon & olive oil, then chilled) served with Aioli Caper Sauce; Orange & Red Onion Salad (with raisins, almonds & olives) dressed with Spanish Vinaigrette, Huevos Rellenos de Gambas (deviled eggs with shrimp, Spanish olives & paprika); Pan Integral (fresh baked crusty wheat bread); Dessert (Seasonal Fruit with Spanish Pastries) and Beverages (Citrus Iced Tea, Assorted Sodas and Coffee). Bring your own wine, beer or Sangria. No corkage fee. Menorcan sandals, optional.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni

BEWARE: THE MIGHTY ARE FALLING

If I thought you were gullible I'd say we've been invaded by space aliens and their young will be hatching soon. They certainly look like "pods" I've seen in sci-fi movies. But because I respect you and have a penchant towards honesty, I'll admit that they simply grew on a tree. Right here in my backyard. And grow they do until each one weighs 3-4 pounds. Under that smooth green skin they're aching to open and reveal their dazzling yellow orange flesh. Look how they tower over a pound of butter! They're Keitt mangoes and they've just been picked by hand off of my tree. This is the first year that there are more than just a handful. I never liked mangoes until I tasted one of these babies. You may have tasted their special flavor coming through my Mango Muffins, Mango Lassi or that famous Bonni Bakes drink, the Mango Tango. I've been trying to outwit a clever young squirrel who delights in throwing down partially eaten fruit from the high branches. Here's my problem, they're all going to ripen at the same time. I'll cook with some and freeze a lot for my own use. But I'll also have a limited number available for sale this week. So if you want a piece of tropical paradise, these organic beauties will be available for $3.50 each. First come, first served. Call me at 746-6647 to reserve one.

And now to consider the other extreme. Take a look at the details on this miniature version of the entire Bonni Bakes building, all four sides + roof. Karen Jennis took lots of photos, went searching for just the perfect rock and then painstakingly re-created it, including the tiniest of details. She painted a zillion individual shingles; chocolate chips on the cookie in the gecko's mouth; curtains seen through the front windows and even outdoor landscaping. Her concentration is amazing, especially when you're painting with a brush that only has two hairs! Make sure you see this little treasure the next time you're in. We'll be displaying an array of Karen's work in the near future. And yes, she does accept commissions.

This week culminates in a spectacular dinner on Saturday night, featuring an endless assortment of taste treats from countries in the Middle East. Stephanie's "MEZE DINNER" sold out quickly last time and many people were disappointed. Don't let that happen this go round. There are two seatings: 5:30 & 7:30pm, prix-fixe complete menu just $20+tax/per person. Here's the amazing line-up: Hummus, Baba Ganough, Marinated Olives, Basil Tomato, Marinated Cucumber, Feta Cheese, Olive Paste Tarts, Spinach Feta Triangles, Walnut Stuffed Grape Leaves, White Cheese Marinated in Garlic Olive Oil, Roasted Red Peppers, Assorted Pita Triangles, Falafel with Harissa, Zucchini Patties with Yogurt Garlic Sauce, Vegetable Kebabs with Tabouleh, Moroccan Chicken Triangles, Kefta Kebabs with Sesame Garlic Sauce, Baklava and Stuffed Dates. Beverages will include Orange Blossom Lemonade, Iced Mint Tea, Assorted Sodas and Turkish Coffee. VEGETARIAN OPTIONS! Bring your own wine, beer, and ouzo. No corkage fee. We don't take credit or debit cards, CASH ONLY. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Call 941-746-6647 to reserve.

Check out the Aug 19th Food Section of the Sarasota Herald Tribune for my interview with Marsha Fottler. If you don't want to cook the recipes yourself, join us on Sat night, August 29th, when we'll prepare the complete menu for Bonni's SPANISH BEACH DINNER. This menu was inspired by picnics I've shared with loved ones on the stunning beaches of Menorca, Spain. Including one at the beach where Mary Jane lived in a tent and Holstein cows wandered loose along the shore!

Gazpacho (icy cold pureed tomato based vegetable soup); Tortilla Espanol (classic potato & onion frittata); Gambas a la Plancha (large shrimp grilled with lemon & olive oil, then chilled) served with Aioli Caper Sauce; Fresh Orange & Red Onion Salad (with raisins, almonds & olives) dressed with Spanish Vinaigrette, Huevos Rellenos de Gambas (deviled eggs with shrimp, Spanish olives & paprika); Pan Integral (fresh baked crusty wheat bread); Dessert (Fresh Fruit with Spanish Pastries) and Beverages (Citrus Iced Tea, Assorted Sodas and Coffee). Bring your own wine, beer or Sangria. No corkage fee. $20+tax/per person. We don't take credit or debit cards, CASH ONLY. Two seatings: 5:30 & 7:30PM. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED, Menorcan sandals optional. Call Bonni at 941-746-6647.

Meanwhile, there'll be a lot of yummy things available for lunch this week. We hope to see you soon. We'll be hanging some of the bras & panties that have arrived for our "Artsy Undies" cancer fundraiser exhibit, opening October 2nd. I'm working on mine, hope you're working on yours. Call for more information.

Hugs from the kitchen,
Bonni
